Passively Q -switched Ytterbium-Doped Double-Clad Fiber Laser With a Cr4+:YAG Saturable Absorber

A high-power and high-repetition-rate passively Q -switched ytterbium-doped single-mode double-clad fiber laser was built using a Cr⁴⁺:YAG saturable absorber (SA). Two different SAs with initial transmissions of T_omicron = 30% and T_omicron = 50% were studied. At the maximum coupled pump power of 9.8 W, an output power of 4.7 W, pulse duration of 143 ns, pulse repetition rate of 253 KHz, pulse energy of 18.5 muJ, and slope efficiency of 49% were obtained with the T_omicron = 30% SA.

寻找隐蔽油气藏一直是油气勘探中的难题,我国东部吉林油田的中浅层已进入高成熟勘探阶段,油气勘探已由早期的构造圈闭勘探转变为现今的以隐蔽圈闭勘探为主的阶段。本文针对松辽盆地南部的西部前缘带三维连片工区及伊通地堑岔路河断陷,综合应用构造精细解释、声波曲线重构波阻抗反演、层序地层学、地震相及沉积(微)相分析、模型正演、地震属性分析、频谱分解及三维可视化等技术手段,所提供的多口探井获得工业油气流或有良好的油气显示,取得了较好的解释效果。     

One-to-Many and Many-to-One Optical Chaos Communications Using Semiconductor Lasers

A theoretical construction of one-to-many (OTM) and many-to-one (MTO) chaos synchronization communications using semiconductor lasers is presented. One center laser provides strong injections (strong link) to other side lasers, and the side lasers also provide weak injections (weak link) to the center one. Simulation results show that the side lasers synchronize with the center laser through injection-locking. In addition, messages transmitted via the strong links or the weak links experience strong chaos pass filtering, enabling us to realize OTM and MTO communications.     

Fracture toughness of thermoset composites reinforced by perfectly bonded impenetrable short fibers

The fracture toughness of brittle thermoset resins could be improved significantly by perfectly bonded tough, short fibers through both crack trapping and bridging effects. In this paper, the crack trapping effect was studied through the analysis of the change of strain energy associated with the crack propagation across a regular array of fibers, and the bridging effect was discussed based on the Andersson–Bergkvist model. The fracture resistance increases with the fiber volume fraction, and is independent of the elastic properties of the matrix, the crack length, and the cross-sectional diameter of the fibers.     

Vertical Vibration of a Flexible Plate with Rigid Core on Saturated Ground

In this paper, the vertical vibration of a flexible plate with rigid core resting on a semi-infinite saturated soil is studied analytically. The behavior of the soil is assumed to follow Biot’s poroelastodynamic theory with compressible soil skeleton and pore water, and the response of the time-harmonic excited plate is governed by the classical thin-plate theory. By virtue of the Hankel transform technique, the fundamental solutions of the skeleton displacements, stresses, and pore pressure are derived, and a set of dual integral equations associated with the relaxed boundary and completely drained condition at the soil-foundation contact interface are also developed. These governing integral equations are further reduced to the standard Fredholm integral equations of the second kind and solved by numerical procedures. Comparison with existing solutions for a rigid permeable plate on saturated soil confirms the accuracy of the present solution. Selected numerical results are presented to show the influence of the permeability, the size of the rigid core, and the plate flexibility on the dynamic interaction between the elastic plate with rigid core and the underlying saturated soil.

Two distinct protein-protein interactions between the NIT2 and NMR regulatory proteins are required to establish nitrogen metabolite repression in Neurospora crassa

Unrecognized and untreated depression occurs frequently in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, adding to the agony already experienced by patient and caregiver. The authors screened AD patients living with a family caregiver for depression. Twelve patients with confirmed depression were treated in an open-label study with antidepressant medication, with dosage adjustment by a psychiatrist at Weeks 2, 4, 8, and 16. Data collection occurred at baseline, Week 4, and Week 16. Depression decreased significantly (p < .01). Contrary to expectations, patient functional capacity declined (p = .045). Cognition remained unchanged (p > .05). Caregiver burden, caregiver depressive symptomatology, and quality of life of patient and caregiver remained unchanged (p > .05). The authors conclude that depression in AD can be detected if a collateral source, such as the caregiver, is available. The depression can and should be treated. More research is needed to determine the impact on patient functioning, caregiver burden, caregiver depressive symptomatology, and quality of life of patient and caregiver.     

Effect of aromatic diamine extenders on the morphology and property of RIM polyurethane–urea

An aromatic diamine, CMOMDA, was synthesized and used as a chain extender for reaction injection molding (RIM) polyurethane–urea. The morphology and properties of CMOMDA-, DETDA-, and MDA-extended poly(ether–urethane–urea)s (PEUUs) were measured by IR, DSC, DMS, SEM, and tensile testing apparatus. Well-matched values of C_h and X_ut,b/C_h were necessary for aromatic diamine-extended PEUU. DSC and SEM showed that the aggregation state of hard segments might undergo some changes with increasing hard-segment content. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

In-laboratory removal of femoral sheath following protamine administration in patients having intracoronary stent implantation

Two hundred twenty-eight patients with successful coronary stent implantation were randomized either to protamine administration and femoral sheath removal (group I, n = 117) or no heparin neutralization and delayed sheath removal (group II, n = 111). The hospital stay after treatment was shorter in patients receiving protamine; therefore, protamine use for neutralizing circulating heparin may be safely administered immediately after stent implantation.     

Characterization of a cartilage-derived 66-kDa protein (RGD-CAP/beta ig-h3) that binds to collagen

Malignant human gliomas are the most common forms of primary tumors in the central nerve system. Due to their location and invasive nature, treatment so far has been mainly palliative. Thus, understanding the molecular detail of tumor transformation and progression is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategy for this fetal tumor. Among the genetic alternations found in these tumors, p53 inactivation and PDGF/PDGFR activation represent the early events, and the loss of chromosome 10 and gene amplification and rearrangement of EGFR represent the late events. Studies with both glioma cell lines and primary tumor tissues have strongly suggested that TGF-alpha and EGFR function as an important autocrine loop in supporting proliferation of human glioma, especially in high grade glioma, since elevated TGF-alpha expression is also found in these high grade tumors. Furthermore, down regulation of the expression of TGF-alpha by antisense constructs has been shown to inhibit several types of human tumor cell growth including glioma. Other means of therapeutic approaches using this autocrine loop as a target also include the use of monoclonal antibodies and their cytotoxic conjugated. Considerable understanding of the EGFR-mediated signal transduction pathways has become available recently, which including GRB2/mSOS1 mediated MAP kinase activation; JAK/STATs pathway; PLC-gamma pathway. However, much work still needs to be done before a specific component of these pathways can be applied for effective control of tumor growth in the clinic.
